Let's wander
through the brewhouses of Cologne!
Cologne boasts approximately 43 brewhouses, offering an abundance of options for Kölsch enthusiasts. While we can't visit all 43 on a brewhouse tour, we'll make sure to include three or four specially selected establishments. These brewhouses not only contribute to the city's vibrant atmosphere but also embody the cherished Kölsch way of life.
To ensure you experience the full spectrum of Kölsch varieties during your trip to Cologne, we'll guide you to the finest brewhouses and provide recommendations on other must-see attractions. Additionally, we'll offer tips on which Kölsch varieties are perfect for takeaway, so you can continue enjoying the taste of Cologne wherever you go!
Always have cash
to hand
Please note that drinks are not included in our public brewhouse tours.
However, it's important to bring cash with you, as the brewhouses often have minimum card payment limits. This not only ensures a smoother transaction but also delights our Köbes (brewhouse waiters), contributing to the perfect brewery experience!
Does it have to be beer all the time?
There are valid reasons why someone may choose not to consume alcohol. While a Kölsch is a quintessential part of the traditional brewhouse visit, we understand and respect individual preferences. Rest assured, we'll gladly provide guidance on how to navigate this situation with confidence and effectively appease even the most gruff Köbes!
Tipping in the brewhouses
We understand that tipping can be a topic of discussion, particularly online.
In Cologne's brewhouses, it's customary to leave a tip, typically around 10 percent. This practice is understandable, as the Köbes tirelessly serves us our beloved Kölsch whenever we gather for some downtime.
By tipping him we show him that we appreciate his work!
Simply an
amazing experience
The brewhouses hold a special place in the heart of Cologne's residents, much like the carnival. Local pride isn't just a concept here—it's ingrained in the very essence of the city. The affection for Cologne is as natural as the devotion to our soccer club, 1. FC Köln. And of course, it extends to our most beloved regional specialty. No, we're not talking about dishes like Himmel un Ääd, Suurbrode, or Halve Hahn—we're talking about Kölsch! Discover what Kölsch and champagne have in common and much more on our fantastic brewhouse tour.
Himmel un Ääd
Our recommendation to try during your stay:
"Himmel un Ääd," or Heaven and Earth, is indeed a classic dish found on every brewery's menu! This traditional dish combines mashed potatoes ("earth") with applesauce ("heaven"), along with sometimes including slices of blood sausage or black pudding. It's a beloved favorite for locals and visitors alike, offering a delicious blend of sweet and savory flavors.
Be sure to savor this iconic dish while you're here!
Suurbrode
Rhenish sauerbraten is indeed a culinary delight! Traditionally made with horse meat in the past, nowadays more commonly prepared with beef. The tender meat is marinated in a flavorful mixture of vinegar, spices, and aromatics, then slow-cooked to perfection. Served with its signature sweet and tangy sauce, which often includes raisins for added richness, alongside hearty potato dumplings and perhaps some stewed apples or red cabbage, it's a truly delicious dish that's sure to please any palate!
Halve Hahn
The quintessential Cologne snack—half a Röggelchen (rye roll) paired with tangy medium-aged Gouda. It's the perfect choice when you're feeling peckish but not quite famished, especially when enjoyed alongside a refreshing Kölsch beer.
And if you're curious about why the Halve Hahn (literally "half a rooster") is named as such, despite not containing any chicken at all, you may uncover the answer on our brewhouse tour! So book our tour now, we are happy to welcome you!
The very
special Cologne people
You can easily identify them from a distance by their distinctive dialect and the melodic cadence of their speech. We'd be delighted to share why the people of Cologne consider Kölsch not just a beer, but a language in its own right. After all, Kölsch is perhaps the only language you can drink! Join us, and discover firsthand why language lessons can be so enjoyable!
